Bethel Park Elementary

“Participation in the IGFSN recognition program has been an incredible experience for Bethel Park Elementary (BPE). Not only is the IGFSN Team extraordinarily helpful and kind, but participation in the program was a great way to verify the awesome things happening with our Farm to School program when applying for the USDA Farm to School Grant. We received this grant in the summer of 2024 and it is going to allow BPE to launch the Farm to School Program even further by installing a salad bar, green house, and other kitchen equipment that will allow meals prepared from scratch. Without the guidance and connections made through Brianna and her team we would not have received this grant.”

Bethel Park Elementary School's Farm Program is a truly remarkable educational initiative that goes far beyond the typical classroom experience. By immersing students in the wonders of nature and hands-on farming, the program instills a deep appreciation for the natural world. Under the guidance of the dedicated Farm to School Coordinator, every student has the opportunity to get their hands dirty in the school's expansive garden, learning about the intricacies of plant growth, composting, and sustainable food production. Students in the upper grades even take on chores around the farm, getting first hand experience with the critical work of conservatism, from collecting cafeteria food waste for the school's innovative bokashi composting system to caring for the resident chickens and goats. This nutrient-rich compost then nourishes the bountiful raised garden beds, allowing the school to grow an impressive array of fresh, healthy produce that is distributed to families in need. And the program's ambitions continue to grow, with plans to establish a community garden space and double food production by 2024. But Bethel Park's commitment to cultivating environmental stewardship and food literacy extends even further, as the school works towards the prestigious "Farm Friendly Badge" and envisions transforming its cafeteria into a fully independent, scratch-cooking operation complete with a dedicated nutritionist and chef. It's a holistic, immersive approach that not only educates students but empowers them to be agents of positive change, reconnecting with the natural world and fostering a healthier, more sustainable future.
